There is no coating applied to these boxes. They are an indoor decoration. If you choose to put this item outside I would highly recommend adding a clear coat to protect it from being exposed to the elements.
These lanterns are one of a kind! No 2 lanterns will ever be the same. I burn each box by hand and the grain is different on each piece of wood giving it's unique character. As with all handmade items, there may be irregularities and small imperfections that will not be encountered in mass produced merchandise.
